Team Fundraiser

Holding a team fundraiser to help with the budget has much more to offer the team than just financial growth. Initially, the fundraiser is used to help the team purchase necessary equipment and uniforms or fund travel to games that are out town. However, there are benefits that a team fundraiser brings that are not as obvious but just as important to the individual member's overall life.

Teamwork is not an entirely new concept to the team members but it is an important part of the team fundraiser and its overall success. Working together to reach the fundraising goal will reinforce the team concept and allow the members to see that teamwork applies to many situations, not just sports and club activities. Teamwork is required in many areas of life and working together on the team fundraiser is one way to see this in action.

A team fundraiser aids in the personal growth of the team members. As they make sales and have positive results their self-esteem increases along with their self-confidence. When they have people who simply can't afford to make a purchase they are learning to accept rejection without taking it as a personal attack.

Working on a team fundraiser teaches the members independence and responsibility, as they are held accountable for their tasks and goals within the team. Members learn valuable life lessons about communication and working toward goals with periods and deadlines that must be met. Many of these traits will be used throughout their life and when developed into habits help to create a work ethic that is highly desired in the workforce.

Citizenship values are also an important benefit that team members take away from a team fundraiser. Working on the team fundraiser teaches the members that volunteering is an important part of community life and is valuable in its own way. This helps to show an activity doesn't have to be rewarded with a material payment; the feeling of helping others can be gratifying in its own right.

Team members often have goals that they are required to meet. This will help to show them the advantage of setting goals and how these goals motivate them to succeed. This lesson is one that they will carry with them through life and call on to help them succeed in future endeavors.

The team fundraiser also teaches many skills that can be used as job skills later in life. Sales are a growing field that requires many different skill sets. As team members create ads and flyers to alert the community to the event they are learning marketing skills. When they go out and solicit sales they are learning to communicate and persuade people to make a purchase, a valuable skill in the world of sales. Keeping accurate records of sales and money during the project is an important skill set that is necessary in many careers. In fact, organization is a skill that helps with life and careers.

Team fundraisers will also show members the importance of participating in fundraisers as the customer. When the team members realize that it takes the community to help meet their goals they will be more apt to help when they see another team or group holding a fundraiser.

It is not always easy to see all of the benefits of a team fundraiser. Many people mistakenly think all they are raising is money when in actuality the team fundraiser is helping to raise future adults with community values that they will carry with them throughout their adult life and pass on their own children.
